What's you're all-time favorite OS, and why? What's your LEAST favorite (while we're at it) and why? my fav is Win2k I'd have to say, from an MS stand point that is. It's almost crash proof, and it runs well, great uptime and resourse usage with it. Finally a product MS almost got perfect. I'm also very partial to Linux, Redhat particularly as many of you know. My least fav is Win ME. It's just TOO darn buggy for my liking. my sister's Dell laptop came preloaded with ME on it, and the day she got it and brought it home, not even out of the box running for an hour and i got it to crash, LOL! Not on purpose either. It's just a sloppy mess of what MS will whip out without putting much time into it.

I think I enjoy Windows 2000 from the Microsoft side. I hate Windows 95 and 98 and ME from the Microsoft side. I enjoy all flavors of Linux and am I enjoy MacOS X and up.

Right now Im running a chubby install of win98SE on my main box and I have a couple lighter installs (98w/95 shell) on others. I like win2k also. Used to run a 3x calmira box for fun, Ill have to yipe the dust off of some junk and get another 3x system running again...just for chits n'giggles... and speeeeed oops..almost forgot. least fav..?? ME...although I have run it (and I do own it) I have had to tweak it in order to get it stable. Still isnt that bad though. I say XP home is the worst for the winblow flavors. In the little time I spent on XPhome, I found it to be crap. LINUX developers...GET A CLUE!!! There is NO way that the average public will use it until there is a control panel that makes sense and allows the user to "see" and understand where things are AND there is a standard software install method! On a MAC or Win computer, I click on a file, the software starts its install, a few questions are asked for setup...and its installed! Linux developers live in a fantasy world where they actually believe that they are building an OS for the people, but in the end, its an OS for elitist, nerdy shmucks...IMHO ...There, I said it...whew..I feel better now. ;D

After reading up on linux, i also agree with whats been said. I believed that linux was going to be a big hit by this time. But because linux is so complicated to use, its just not going anywhere. People like computers to be simple, thats why they buy them, linux is a very complicated system, especially for those who are used to windows, because microsoft holds our hand through everything, from instaling software to writing a resume. Linux is great, but its just not simple enough. Its so close to start a revolution, but its leaving something out every new version.

I must agree with Mofish03, Linux would be much more popular if it was easier to use by the average user. If the Linux community wants to take a real bite out of Microsoft, they need to put out an OS that is just as easy ( if not easier ) to use than Windows, does everything Windows does ( or even more ), and priced at a fraction of Windows. Just because most of the world uses Windows doesn't mean it's the best OS, it just means it's the easiest to use. In my house, the wife's machine and the kids machine run XP home, my machines run 98 (first edition). I have not tried Linux yet, as I have no idea as to which one to try. I've seen in many forums the question asked "Which Linux is the best?" and the answer is invaribly, "The one that works best for you". Fine. But how do I fiqure out which is the best for me? Try each one? Right, like I have the time to do that! So, I'm using Windows till I find some kind of comparison chart to help me decide which Linux is the right linux for me. Sorry, didn't mean to ramble on like that.

It's okay to ramble on. Linux has a bit more to offer than Windows but getting to know how to use these things is the hard part. Once you get over the step learning curve life is fairly simple. I am somewhere in the middle of that steep climb right now. I will never say I am an expert.

Try the latest RedHat or even better yet Mandrake. I have successfully install both. I will probably get back into Linux (for the umteenth time) and put in a serious attempt to learn how better to use it...soon. Ok...its good that we bashed linux a bit here, because what has been said is basically the truth. But, what it comes down to is that comparison of apples and oranges. We must remember that Linux is being "rebuilt" every day from many people all over the world. The open source method is more like true evolution of a system. I'm sure if you worked at MS you would say its really the same for windows, but in the end for windows development once the goals for the next version are set in stone, thats the direction the development takes. With linux and any other open source software there are MANY goals for many reasons. Hence linux development's cumbersome results. Can anyone give me an example of ANY product that the BEST is also the most popular?? Cars, movies, music, software (ok maybe PS7 ) food...so on. McDonalds hamburgers are the most consumed burgers...are they the best? I have read that BeOs was the best OS ever compiled...go figure!

Everything has its time. Linux will soon rise. Apple is dying steadily. (Unless they unleash the true beast Mac OS X on x86) Microsoft wil make a mistake somwehre and eventually slow down a lot. What goes up, will come down...eventually.

well it's obvious that windows is a nice operating system, but XP is just fancy and colorful looking icons, no doubt about it that windows 2000 is the best. But if your a h@<k3r Linux would be the best OS for you

One can actually consider it OS X before it was OS X due to some similarities...
